Blood vessel and cells. Computer artwork of various blood cells and a blood vessel. The blood vessel consists of an outer layer of muscle (pink) surrounding an inner layer of epithelial tissue (transparent cells with black nuclei). Travelling through the lumen of the blood vessel are red blood cells, white blood cells (green) and platelets (blue). Red blood cells distribute oxygen to body tissues and carry waste carbon dioxide back to the lungs. White blood cells are part of the body's immune system and fight invading pathogens. Platelets are blood cell fragments and are essential for blood clotting.
