Caption

Blood vessels of the head. Digitised-colour angio- gram of the human head viewed in profile, showing normal branches of the internal carotid artery. The internal carotid artery, the largest vessel near the base of the skull, is the major artery which supplies blood to the head. Its branches (orange) are visible in the region of the jaw, eye, and brain. Angiography is an X-ray technique which investigates arteries after a radio-opaque contrast medium has been injected into the blood vessels. The technique may be used to locate cerebrovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, brain haemorrhage or the causes of stroke.
