Blood vessel. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through a blood vessel of the lung. Red blood cells, or erythrocytes (red), are the flattened biconcave discs within the blood vessel. Erythrocytes contain the red pigment haemoglobin, which picks up oxygen from the lung and transports it to tissue around the body. At upper right is a capillary, a tiny thin-walled blood vessel involved in gaseous exchange within the lung. Surrounding the blood vessels is fibrous tissue including air spaces involved in the exchange of gases with the blood. Magnification unknown.
