Aorta. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a healthy human aorta, a large artery. The lumen (at top), the arterial space, is partially filled with red blood cells (erythrocytes). The arterial wall consists of a highly elastic layer (mainly white) below the endothelium, and a larger less elastic layer. This second layer also contains connective tissue and muscle fibres (red ovals). The elasticity of artery walls allows for pulsile blood flow. Magnification: x210 at 6x7cm size.
