Artery. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through a muscular artery. The artery is full of red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) which carry oxygen around the body. The walls of the artery consist of the innermost tunica intima and muscular tunica media (pink), and the fibrous tunica adventitia (orange). Muscular arteries are found in the smaller arterial branches. The muscle they contain provides control over the volume of blood reaching the tissue they supply. Magnification unknown.
