Caption

Aorta. Coloured X-ray of a healthy aorta. The aorta (green) is the main artery. It carries blood from the heart (not seen, lower centre) to the arteries supplying the rest of the body (except the lungs). This image shows the aortic arch, where the aorta curves downward after leaving the heart. The aortic arch contains receptors which sense blood pressure and chemical changes such as levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide and acidity. This image was produced by arteriography, a technique where arteries are injected with a substance that is opaque to X-rays to allow them to be seen.
