Vertebral artery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) angiogram of one of the vertebral arteries of the spinal column. The artery is seen from top to bottom through the centre of the image. A pair of vertebral arteries supply blood to the muscles of the spine, the spinal cord and the cerebellum. The spine consists of a column of vertebrae, seen here in side view. The body of each vertebra is to the left of the column, and the spinous process is to the right. MRI scans produce slice images through tissues using a powerful magnet and pulses of radio waves. To produce an angiogram, a contrast material is introduced into an artery so that the blood vessels can be visualized.
