Neck anatomy. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the bones and blood vessels of the human neck. This view is from the side, with the jaw bones at upper right. The spine runs down the back of the neck at left, with blood vessels (orange) seen within the spinal column (the vertebral arteries and veins) and in the soft tissue at the front of the neck (right, the carotid arteries and jugular veins). Blood vessels enter and leave the brain at upper centre, and branch over the skull at upper left. Other structures in the neck include the hyoid bone (centre right, horse-shoe shaped), and the thyroid gland (below hyoid). CT scanning uses X-rays to look at structures inside the body.
