Capillary. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a capillary, the smallest type of blood vessel. Red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) are seen in the capillary. Capillaries permeate body tissues, forming a mesh between arteries and veins. Their walls are very thin and permeable, allowing gases and nutrients to diffuse through them to the tissues in which they are required. Magnification unknown.
