Capillary on muscle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a capillary (pink) carrying blood to muscle fibres (brown). The capillary is so fine that a red blood cell (erythrocyte, red) can only just pass through. The capillary network supplies the muscle with oxygen and nutrients, which it uses to create energy by respiration. The blood also takes away the waste product of respiration, carbon dioxide. Magnification: x6900 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
