False-colour image of the human heart, based on an 18th century engraving. The bulk of the heart tissue comprises the left & right ventricles or chambers. The right ventricle (bottom left) pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery, a branch of which is seen at top right. Oxygenated blood returns to the heart via the pulmonary veins & left atrium, the smaller upper chamber on the right, before entering the heavily- muscled wall of the left ventricle (bottom right) from where it is pumped into the aorta (seen at top with 3 branches) & around the body.
