Human heart. Digitised-colour illustration of a healthy human heart, seen with the arteries and veins that service it. As a pump the heart circulates blood around the body. It consists of four chambers. Two chambers on the left side (at right on image) receive oxygenated blood from the lungs and pump it to the body via the aortic arch artery (upper centre). Used blood from the body is collected in the large vena cava veins (at lower left; Y-shaped at upper left) before it too is pumped through the heart, the right side, to the lungs via pulmonary arteries. Special mechanisms in the heart maintain its cardiac pump-rhythm.
