Echocardiogram. Coloured ultrasound image of the human heart, or echocardiogram. Areas of the heart are labelled: OG = left atrium; VG = left ventri- cle; VM = bicuspid valve (which separates the left atrium and ventricle); AO = aorta (the main artery leading out of the heart). Echocardiograms are made from echoes of high-frequency sound emitted by a transducer placed against the skin. Different structures inside the body reflect the sound waves in different ways, producing an image a doctor can interpret. The technique is used to look for dis- orders like faulty heart valves and inborn heart defects. The line along the bottom is an electro- cardiogram trace of the heartbeat.
