Healthy heart muscle. Coloured scintigram showing blood flow through the muscle of a healthy human heart (seen in transverse section). This image was made by a technique called myocardial perfusion scintigraphy, which is carried out to look for signs of ischaemic heart disease (reduced blood flow to the heart's muscle). The patient is injected with a radioactive tracer and an image of the heart taken with a gamma camera after vigorous exercise. The strong colours here show that the heart is well supplied with blood. The tracer used was technetium (99mTc). See M172/297 for a heart affected by ischaemia.
