Human heart. Illustration of anterior (at left) and posterior (at right) views of the human heart and its major blood vessels. The arteries are red, the veins are blue and the pulmonary system is in purple. Internal structures of both halves of the heart are visible. Each consists of an upper atrium and lower ventricle. Veins carry deoxygenated blood from the body to the right side of the heart. Blood is pumped to and from the lungs via the pulmonary system. Arteries carry the oxygenated blood pumped to the body from the left side of the heart.
