Heart. Illustration of the human chest sectioned to show the heart, with part of the respiratory system. Coming down the neck at top is the trachea (windpipe) with its rings (blue) of cartilage. The trachea conveys air into the lungs (pink, spongy) where gas exchange takes place. The lungs have been pinned back to reveal the body's blood pump, the heart (red and yellow). Above the heart are the main blood vessels. The main vein (vena cava, blue) brings deoxygenated blood to the heart from the body. The main artery (aorta, red) pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
