Healthy ECG heart trace. Electrocardiogram (ECG) traces of a healthy heartbeat. The lower two traces are seen upside down. The heart pumps blood around the body. ECG traces measure the beating of the heart as a series of waves which correspond to the electrical activity of the heart muscle just before it contracts. The tall waves correspond to contraction of the heart's lower chambers, the ventricles. The small waves just before these peaks correspond to contraction of the upper chambers, the atria. The medium waves occur as the heart's electrical potential returns to normal. ECGs are an important way of monitoring the heart.
