Caption

Healthy heart scan. Coloured gamma scan (scinti- gram) of sections through a healthy human heart. In these views, myocardial muscle tissue is seen as a horseshoe or ring shape (red, white) surroun- ding the heart's chambers (black). The thick heart muscle pumps blood from the left ventricle all over the body. The inferior views (top) show a section of the heart as seen from below, while the images at centre and lower frame show sections through the heart's long axes. Gamma scanning uses a radioactive tracer introduced into the bloodstream to study specific areas. The health and functioning of the tissue can then be studied.
