Caption

Human heart. Illustration of a human heart. Arrows show the direction of blood flow. Deoxygenated blood (blue arrows) enters the heart's right side (at left here) from the body through the vena cava (blue, upper and lower left). It is passed from the right atrium (upper chamber) to the right ventricle (lower chamber), which pumps it back out through the pulmonary arteries (blue, above heart) to the lungs (not seen), where the blood is oxygenated. Oxygenated blood (pink arrows) re- enters the heart from the pulmonary veins (left and right of heart), passing from the left atrium to the powerful left ventricle, which pumps it to the body through the aorta (red, upper centre).
