Heart and lungs. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a human chest showing a healthy heart (red) and pair of lungs (pale blue). This is a horizontal (axial) CT scan looking up the body. Three of the heart's four chambers are seen: the right ventricle (1), the right atrium (2) and the left ventricle (3). The vena cava (4) carries deoxygenated blood to the heart. The heart pumps oxygenated blood to the lower parts of the body through the descending aorta (orange, centre). At lower centre is a vertebra (orange) of the spine, inside which is the spinal cord (blue). Ribs (orange) of the ribcage surround the lungs.
