Heart ultrasound. Coloured echocardiogram of a normal heart. The four chambers of the heart are labelled and appear as dark spaces surrounded by the heart walls (red, blue): the right ventricle (1); left ventricle (2); right atrium (3); and the left atrium (4). The atria receive blood from the body and pass it to the corresponding ventricle on the same side of the heart. The ventricles pump the blood around the body. Echocardiographs are obtained by directing ultra-high frequency sound waves at the heart and recording the returning echoes. This builds up a two-dimensional image of the heart and is a valuable diagnostic technique.
