Heart. Artwork of a section through the top of the heart. The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood around the body. At bottom are the two upper chambers of the heart, the right atrium (left) and the left atrium (right). At top is the pulmonary artery, which carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle (upper chamber, not seen) to the lungs. At upper centre is the aorta, which carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle (not seen) to the body. Visible inside the aorta and pulmonary artery are their valves, shown in a closed position. The valves prevent the back flow of blood into the ventricles.
