Heart. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scans of the healthy heart of a 23 year old. Coronal views of the heart are at top and axial views are at bottom. The heart is a hollow muscle that pumps blood around the body. Deoxygenated blood enters the right side of the heart via the vena cava. From here the blood travels into the lungs via the pulmonary artery, where it is oxygenated. The blood is then carried into the left side of the heart before travelling back into the body via the aorta. In the upper right scan the pulmonary artery is at upper right, the aorta is at upper centre and the vena cava is behind the aorta.
