Human heart, computer artwork. The heart is a hollow muscular organ responsible for pumping blood around the body. It receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the vena cava (upper left), which it pumps to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. The oxygenated blood returns to the heart through the pulmonary veins (upper right), and is then pumped around the body through the aorta (upper centre). Three branches of the aorta at top carry blood to the arms and head.
