Beating heart cell, fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. A fluorescent dye, fluo-3, has been used to highlight calcium levels, from low levels (green), to high levels (red and white). Muscle cell contraction is triggered by rising calcium levels, in this case triggering the beating of the heart. This sequence (left to right from top left to bottom right) shows the inrush and outflow of calcium as a single heart muscle cell contracts. Each image is separated by a delay of 43 milliseconds.
