Cardiac muscle fibres. Fluorescence deconvolution micrograph of a cross-section through the muscle fibres from a normal heart. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight tissues, cellular structures and proteins: cardiac muscle (red), cell nuclei (blue), dystrophin (green). Dystrophin is an important muscle protein that connects the cytoskeleton of a muscle fibre to its surroundings. Deficiency of this protein causes muscular dystrophy. Here, the dystrophin is regular in appearance, as seen in healthy muscle tissue.
