Light micrograph of a human bone marrow smear showing the presence of maturing erythrocytes or red blood cells (red) & leucocytes or white blood cells (purple). Bone marrow fills all the intertrabecular spaces of bone & is crammed with stem cells & precursors of mature blood cells. Active bone marrow, also known as red marrow, is dominated by the production of red blood cells & hence its deep red colour. With increasing age the marrow becomes less active & is progressively dominated by adipocytes (fat). Mature marrow is known as yellow marrow, due to the preponderance of these yellow fat cells. Magnification X 250 (at 35mm size).
