Erythroblast. Coloured Transmission Electron Micr- ograph of a forming red blood cell (erythrocyte) from the human bone marrow. This is the second stage in the development of the cell, when it is known as an erythroblast. A large red nucleus fills most of the cell, and condensing chromatin- nuclear material is seen (yellow and green) within the nucleus. In further stages, the cell will become smaller, lose it's nucleus and contain progressively larger amounts of haemoglobin. This is the pigment which allows the red blood cells to hold and transport oxygen around the body. Erythrocyte formation is called erythropoie- sis. Magnification: x6800 at 6x6cm size.
