Red bone marrow. Computer-enhanced light micro- graph of a cross-section through human red bone marrow. Bone marrow (yellow) lies within the spaces of the spongy or cancellous bone (red/orange) within the centre of the bone. Bone marrow contains stem cells which, through the process of haemopoiesis, generate the three main types of cells found in the blood: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leucocytes) and platelets (thrombocytes). Magnification: x200 at 5x7cm size.
