Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph of human blood, showing aggregates of red blood cells (erythrocytes) with 2 lymphocytes ( a type of white blood cell) at top. Erythrocytes are biconcave discs packed with haemoglobin (the iron- containing respiratory pigment), functioning in the transport of oxygen & carbon dioxide. Lymphocytes (smallest of white cells) have a sparse cytoplasm (green) & the nucleus is small (chromatin appears red), reflecting a relatively inactive state. When activated during immunological response, the lymphocytes undergo radical structural & metabolic changes. Magnification: X 1500 at 35mm size.
