Caption

Red and white blood cells. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph of human red and white blood cells. Red blood cells, known as erythrocytes, are red biconcave discs. These contain the pigment haemoglobin which allows them to transport & supply oxygen to the body. The white blood cells seen here are lymphocytes (coloured yellow) which are involved in the body's immune response system. The purple cells seen are also red blood cells. The unusual shape of these crenated red blood cells may be symptomatic of a blood disorder but more normally is a result of prolonged storage of a blood specimen. Magnification: x3,100 at 6x7cm size.
