Blood cells. Computer artwork of blood cells in the bloodstream. Two main types are seen here: red blood cells (erythrocytes) and neutrophil white blood cells, with characteristic lobed nuclei (pink). Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to tissues which require it. Neutrophils are an important part of the immune system. They recognise and destroy foreign bodies, such as bacteria, in the bloodstream.
