Caption

Blood cells. Computer artwork of the composition of the blood. Components of the blood are seen inside a blood vessel: red blood cells (red); white blood cells (green); and platelets (blue). Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are biconcave, disc-shaped cells that transport oxygen to body cells and remove carbon dioxide, as the blood circulates around the body. The red colour comes from the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin. White blood cells (leucocytes) are part of the immune system, defending the body against infection. Platelets (thrombocytes) are active in blood coagulation (clotting).
