Blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) and a white blood cell (leucocyte, yellow). The red blood cells (disc-shaped and biconcave) transport oxygen to cells in the body and also remove carbon dioxide from those cells to the lungs. Leucocytes are part of the immune system, defending the body against infection. They do this by ingesting pathogens by phagocytosis or by producing antibodies. Magnification: x4000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
