Hypotonic red blood cells. Light micrograph of red blood cells in a hypotonic solution. Hypotonic solutions contain a low concentration of solute relative to the cells' cytoplasm. When the cells are placed in a hypotonic solution, the water diffuses into the cells, causing them to become turgid (swell). Magnification: x460 when printed 10cm wide. For a sequence showing red blood cells in hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic solutions, see images P242/456-458.
