Isotonic red blood cells. Light micrograph of red blood cells in an isotonic solution. Isotonic solutions are those where the concentration of solute is the same as that found in the cells' cytoplasm. When the cells are placed in an isotonic solution, they retain their normal shape and water content. Here, the normal biconcave shape of the red blood cells can be seen. This is how they appear in the bloodstream. Magnification: x460 when printed 10cm wide. For a sequence showing red blood cells in hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic solutions, see images P242/456-458.
