Hypertonic red blood cells. Light micrograph of red blood cells in a hypertonic solution. Hypertonic solutions contain a high concentration of solute relative to the cells' cytoplasm. When the cells are placed in a hypertonic solution, the water diffuses out of the cells, causing them to shrink and collapse. Magnification: x460 when printed 10cm wide. For a sequence showing red blood cells in hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic solutions, see images P242/456-458.
