Apoptosis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a human lymphocyte, a type of white blood cell, undergoing apoptosis, or genetically programmed cell death. Outside the nucleus (yellow), the cytoplasm (green/red) is fragmenting into lumps, called blebs, breaking the cell apart. These cell fragments are then digested by phagocytic cells. Self-destruction is a normal part of a cell's life and is programmed into its genes. Mutations that prevent apoptosis can lead to the uncontrolled proliferation that causes cancer. Magnification x2000 at 35mm size.
