White blood cell, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). White blood cells are part of the immune system, which protects the body against invading organisms. Macrophage white blood cells engulf such organisms, which include bacteria and protozoa. Lymphocyte white blood cells release antibodies, chemicals that can weaken the invaders, or alert macrophages to their presence. Magnification: x9000 when printed 10cm wide.
