Caption

Activated platelets. Artwork of activated platelets on the interior wall of a blood vessel. Platelets are a constituent of the blood, and are usually disc-shaped cells. When they encounter an injury to the wall of a blood vessel, they develop the long extensions shown. This activation also leads to the production of fibrin, and the combination of platelets and fibrin traps red blood cells, and forms a clot. The clot prevents blood being lost from the vessel, and also stops infective agents entering the bloodstream.
