Blood clot. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a blood clot. Spiky blood cells called platelets have become enmeshed in a network of fi- brin fibres (red). Blood clots form when platelets are activated by contact with damaged blood vess- els. The activated cells turn into spiky spheres that clump together and release chemical factors into the blood. These factors activate more plate- lets as well as starting a cascade of chemical reactions that turns the soluble protein fibrino- gen into insoluble protein fibres called fibrin. The fibrin fibres form a dense network that enmeshes blood cells and eventually tightens into a solid clot. Magnification unknown.
