Blood clot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a blood clot. Thin strands of fibrin (blue) are also seen. In normal conditions red blood cells have the shape of biconcave discs: in a blood clot they are densely packed and assume a typical polyhedral or cubic shape. Fibrin is an insoluble protein and represents a mutation of a soluble protein called fibrinogen normally present in blood. Blood clots may occur on the surface of skin in case of injuries or inside blood vessels, where they are known as thrombi. In the later case they may lead to heart attacks. Magnification: x2000 at 6x7cm size.
