In this illustration, a woman with a blood clot in her brain is receiving one type of treatment for it. Drugs that break down the clot are delivered through a catheter introduced into a large area and threaded to the brain and the affected area. Blood clots in the brain interrupt the supply of blood, and brain cells become starved of oxygen. Left untreated, blood clots are a major cause of ischaemic stroke and cerebral thrombosis in the brain.
