Blood foreign bodies. Computer artwork of cells in the bloodstream with foreign bodies. Red blood cells (red) have a biconcave shape. Neutrophil white blood cells (blue, transparent) have a three-lobed nucleus (pink). These cells are part of the immune response, and help to keep the blood free of foreign bodies (spiky). These represent allergens, hormones or viruses. An allergen is anything which provokes an allergic response. Common ones include fungal spores and pollen. Viruses are tiny organisms which reproduce inside living cells, and generally damage their host. Hormones are substances released into the blood to regulate the activity of bodily functions.
