Caption

Umbilical cord mast cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a culture of blood mast cells from a human umbilical cord. Mast cells are a type of leucocyte (white blood cell) present in many body tissues, and have a role in allergic and immune responses. Blood cells from the umbilical cord may be used in transplantations between relatives. The umbilical cord is rich in precursors of many of the body's blood cells (stem cells). Magnification: x1500 at 35mm size.
