This photograph shows a secondary school demonstration of the effect of a magnetic field on an electron beam. The dark circles are coils of wire which form an electromagnet. An electric current flowing in the wire produces a magnetic field along the axis of the coils. The electron beam is deflected in a direction perpendicular to that of the magnetic field.
