False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a macrophage (yellow/green), surrounded by lymphocytes, in a human lymph node. Macrophages are monocytes that reside in tissues such as the lymphatic system and lungs; some migrate to sites of infection in response to chemical stimuli. In addition to their scavenging role, macrophages process antigenic (foreign) substances during the initial phase of immune response. Processed antigens are presented on the macrophage's surface so they might be recognized and possibly ultimately eliminated by specific lymphocytes. Magnification: x1840 at 6x7cm size.
