Caption

Abdominal & thoracic nerves. Computer-enhanced artwork of organs in the human abdomen and thorax with their supply of nerves and blood vessels. At centre is the heart with it's surface coronary blood vessels. White autonomic nerves are seen above the heart. At lower centre the kidneys are seen with a network of nerve fibres running between them. The blue blood vessel seen running up and down the body is the vena cava, which drains blood from the body and leads it to the heart. Nerve fibres lead information to the brain which acts as a central processing unit to control the body's responses. Drawing by the Italian anatomist Paolo Mascagni (1755-1815).
