Facial nerves. Coloured X-ray of a human skull, showing the parts of the face (coloured) that are supplied by branches of the trigeminal nerve. The skull has been halved down its centre, revealing a sagittal section. The ophthalmic nerve supplies the area (purple) above the eyes. The maxillary nerve supplies the area (yellow) around the cheekbones and upper jaw. The mandibular nerve supplies the area (green) around the lower jaw (mandible). Motor nerve fibres are involved in the control of muscle movements, such as in chewing. Sensory nerve fibres relay sensory inputs, such as pain and pressure changes, from the face to the brain.
