Caption

Peripheral nervous system. Computer artwork of the main nerves of the somatic part of the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system does not include the brain and spinal cord, which are part of the central nervous system (CNS). The somatic peripheral nerves are responsible for carrying signals about pain, sensation and muscle movements. The other part of the peripheral nervous system, the autonomic (not seen), unconsciously controls organ functions, such as heart rate.
